Dr. Laura Meadows

Institute Director Laura Meadows

Welcome to the Carl Vinson Institute of Government’s website. Our institute, a public service unit of the University of Georgia, was founded in 1927. While the way we do our work has certainly evolved since that time, we’ve always had a consistent mission – to promote excellence in government. We work to increase the capacity of governments in Georgia and around the world to better serve their constituents through training, applied research, technical assistance and technology solutions. We’re proud to serve thousands of elected officials, professional staff and appointed board members from across Georgia and beyond.

Our work is accomplished by more than 150 dedicated faculty and staff and through collaboration with numerous external partners and colleagues across the UGA campus. Everything we do helps build the skills and abilities of government officials while also providing them important tools for informed decision making. And we do our work while connecting students with opportunities for exposure to government and engagement in real-world problems and solutions to complement their classroom time at UGA.

Because the world and government itself change so quickly, we strive to be innovative and responsive in our work, nimbly shifting focus as needs in the state change. We now offer more access to web-based learning as well as training and applied research in areas of emphasis for UGA and the state such as economic and workforce development and education. We also are creating more access to data for decision making with online tools like GeorgiaDATA.org

We are proud to be part of the important public service and outreach mission of the University of Georgia and the charge to make a difference in the lives of all Georgians. Responsive, efficient and effective governance is important to the overall quality of life for our citizens, and we are honored to promote excellence in government every day. Thanks for visiting our website, and do let us know how we might be of service to you.

The chapel has been restored in a way that allows for its use by a wide variety of university and community groups for plays, concerts, lectures, weddings, meetings, and other special events. The Spalding Theater, which seats 240, and the Conference/Green Room, which seats 45, are rented to the public.
