The 2Gen Leadership Academy, a partnership between the University of Georgia Carl Vinson Institute of Government and the Georgia Children’s Cabinet, honored 25 graduates at a June ceremony in Atlanta. The graduates, representing 13 state agencies, make up the leadership academy’s third cohort since its start in 2022. The academy, created and facilitated by the UGA Institute of Government, is the nation’s first cross-agency 2Gen leadership academy and is recognized as a national model. 2Gen—short for “two-generation”—is a set of approaches applied in policy and service provision that intentionally and simultaneously work with children and their parents or caregivers to build the well-being of the entire family. Georgia Children’s Cabinet member agencies and organizations nominate staff to attend the academy. From September to June, participants take courses taught by nationally recognized experts and work on cross-agency capstone projects. The third cohort’s capstone projects are tied to the work of the Georgia Department of Human Services and the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities and focus on the Georgia Gateway, the state’s online portal for access to assistance programs, and issues related to opioid prevention, treatment and recovery.
