The Renaissance Strategic Visioning and Planning Process (RSVP)

The Downtown Renaissance Strategic Visioning and Planning Process assists downtowns through the creation of a community-supported vision, plan, and implementation program. The RSVP is both a downtown master planning process and a downtown planning document that illustrates the community’s vision for the future and provides the steps to get there. Driven by a robust public input process that seeks the participation of all community members, RSVPs help local governments and community partners prioritize top downtown issues and work to establish a consensus around what must be achieved in the short and long-term.

The RSVP 3-Step Process

RSVP Three-Step Process

Step One: Where Are We Now?

Public input and engagement includes a visual preference assessment, community town hall, one-on-one interviews, focus groups, demographic scan, plan review, and steering committee meetings.

Step Two: Where Are We Going?

Ideas and concepts are illustrated by designs, renderings, and visualizations.

Step Three: How Do We Get There?

A path to success is outlined by creating a work program and implementation plan.

RSVP’s master planning process helps communities better understand their assets, more clearly identify their priorities, and use them both as a basis for planning. Throughout the development of the plan, the community identifies issues that are affecting the community, articulates big-picture goals, and develops short and long-term strategies to address the issues.  Those strategies, and their critical and carefully developed implementation steps, provide a unique checklist of sorts to guide the community forward – literally listing who will be responsible, who the partners are, the timeline, funding sources, steps to take, and obstacles to implementation. The details in the implementation plan add accountability, and community members know who is responsible for each action item.

A critical and unique component of the RSVP master plan process is the development of the implementation plan that includes short and long-term action items. These action items are the implementation plan that includes short and long-term action items. These action items are the necessary steps to move the community’s vision forward.
