Hi all. I'm back with your fresh copy of the Gainesville Patch newsletter. Here's everything you need to know about what's happening in the community today.

But first, your local weather:

  • Tuesday: A heavy t-storm in the p.m. High: 87 Low: 71.

  • Wednesday: Humid; a stray p.m. t-storm. High: 86 Low: 70.

Here are the top three stories in Gainesville today:

  1. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources reported issuing 17 citations for boating under the influence over the Fourth of July weekend, with five originating from the Gainesville area around Lake Lanier. The agency also emphasized its commitment to enforcing safety regulations, including the child life jacket law and other boating violations. Tragically, Lake Lanier has already seen three drowning incidents this year, according to the department. (FOX 5 Atlanta)

  2. Continuing the festive spirit of Independence Day, Gainesville's First Friday Concert Series is slated for Jul. 7, featuring the southeast Georgia-based band, Backyard Loveseat. The concert, hosted by Main Street Gainesville, will be held from 7-10 p.m. on the historic downtown square, with setup beginning at 3 p.m. Attendees can arrive from 6 p.m. to secure their spots and enjoy food and drinks from local vendors, along with freebies and merchandise from the city's new mobile welcome center, The Gateway. 3. Gainesville has leveraged a unique strategic planning process developed by the University of Georgia Vinson Institute of Government, most recently resulting in $4.4 million in funding from the governor's office. The funding supports projects from a community-driven plan named "A Vision for the Athens Street and 129 South Corridors," focusing on enhancing greenspace and connectivity. Gainesville and Hall County will each receive $2.2 million from a larger statewide fund to enhance neighborhood facilities like parks and sidewalks, particularly in communities hit hard by the pandemic. • Calling all local house hunters! These gorgeous Gainesville properties have just hit the market, including 4735 Willie Robinson Road and 3220 Lakeland Lane. Get the property specs and list prices at the link. (Gainesville Patch)

  • On Jul. 17 at 5:30 pm, the Hall County Library's Gainesville branch will host "Booked, Bagged and Tagged," a thrilling event delving into the history of murders tied to Lake Lanier, with presenters Bridget and Andy sharing insights from their latest projects and podcasts.
